Secondary traumatic hyphaema.

چکیده
THE occurrence of secondary haemorrhage after a contusion with a blunt instrument is fortunately not too common, but its association with intractable glaucoma and possible blood-staining of the cornea makes its treatment necessary to prevent blindness. The purpose of this short account of two cases is to confirm the value of the hypotensive method described by Kenny (1959) and Werner (1959), which has two main objects: (1) Removal of the haemorrhage and organized blood clot from the anterior chamber. (2) Prevention of further bleeding. A method of removing the haemorrhage and clot was suggested by Pierse (1964) and Heath (1966), who recommended irrigation of the anterior chamber with urokinase; this treatment will liquefy the clot but cannot help to arrest the bleeding, and was not used in either of our cases.

Paracentesis as Surgical Intervention in Traumatic Hyphaema: Opinions and Practices of Nigerian Ophthalmologists
INTRODUCTION Various aspects of management of traumatic hyphaema are enmeshed in controversy. Surgery is done to prevent complications: optic atrophy and corneal blood staining occurring if a high risk exists of either or both occurring. Circumstances considered high risk do not enjoy universal consensus. OBJECTIVES To determine what Nigerian ophthalmologists consider absolute indications for...
متن کاملThe role of tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron) in the treatment of traumatic hyphaema.
Thirty-five patients with traumatic hyphaema were studied. One group of 18 was treated routinely and the other group of 17 was treated additionally with cyklokapron (tranexamic acid) orally. Patients with other serious ocular injuries were excluded. The incidenceofsecondary haemorrhage, speed of recovery and the final visual acuity were noted. It was found that the majority of patients treated ...
متن کاملTraumatic hyphaema: a retrospective study of 314 cases.
A retrospective study was made of 314 consecutive cases of traumatic hyphaema in a mixed urban and rural Scottish population. Secondary haemorrhage occurred in 4.1% of cases and was not associated with a worsening of final visual acuity. There were no identifiable risk factors for secondary haemorrhage. Poor visual outcome was in most cases attributable to retinal pathology. The use of antifibr...
متن کاملTraumatic hyphaema in Kaduna, Nigeria.
In a 2-year prospective study of 76 patients with traumatic hyphaema seen at the Ahmadu Bello University Hospital, Kaduna, 75% were under 20 years of age. A low male to female ratio of 3 to 1 relative to other reports was noted. Hyphaema occurred in the left eye 1.6 times more often than in the right eye. Thrown objects, such as sticks and stones, caused hyphaema in the largest number of patien...
متن کاملViscoelastic evacuation of traumatic hyphaema.
A technique for the safe evacuation of traumatic hyphaema is described. The viscoelastic properties of Healonid are used to separate the hyphaema from other ocular tissues and to extrude it through a small corneal incision. Healonid maintains a deep anterior chamber and a stable intraocular pressure. It also protects the lens, cornea, and iris and allows clear observation.
متن کاملTraumatic Hyphaema: A report of 472 consecutive cases
BACKGROUND Strategies for prevention of eye injuries require knowledge of the cause of the injuries. This study was done to determine the patient characteristics, the cause of injury, and where cases of traumatic hyphaema that necessitated admission to a tertiary hospital occurred. This may enable an appropriate intervention in the prevention of such injuries. METHODS Retrospective case analy...
